Weekend Property Crime, Longer Daylight/Warmer Weather and Auto Burglaries

Crime Prevention Tip of the Day:  Warmer weather, longer daylight hours — this often brings higher numbers of auto burglaries.  We like to use the parks and trails and tuck purses under the front seat or leave wallets in the glove box or center console when going shopping or for a hike, run or bicycle ride.  We seem to be ‘looser’ with our belongings and forget to lock up and secure property or to leave that purse at home.

Here’s the tally of what was stolen from parked vehicles over the weekend:  a gun (from an unlocked vehicle), radio, iPod, 2 purses, multiple gift cards and $200 cash.  Where did these occur?  Our weekend auto burglaries were reported from single-family residential areas, a gym parking lot, a big-box retail store parking lot (2 vehicles at that same parking lot), a trail head parking lot and a grocery store parking lot.  I am seeing police reports that show victims left vehicles parked and unlocked, locked and the locks were ‘punched’ or ‘popped’ and I am also seeing the ‘smash & grab’ where the offender breaks a window to get inside the vehicle.  To protect your property and your vehicle, lock up, if you have an alarm please activate it, park in areas with good visibility and lots of potential witnesses, bring anything of value with you  when you walk away from the vehicle and use your situational awareness skills to scan the parking lot before you hop out for your errand or outing — do the people nearby seem to have legitimate business there?  Does it seem ‘sketchy’ to you?  You can always return another day if things don’t feel right to you.
