Crime prevention tips from these cases —

Lock up!  Keep garages closed and secured.  Don’t leave garage door openers in parked vehicles.

Too many cases are occurring in the Foothills where offenders break into a vehicle, steal the garage door opener and then proceed to commit further crimes.  I am seeing cases just this week (we’re only at Wednesday!) where offenders have stolen a vehicle, attempted to steal another vehicle, burglarized other vehicles that were in the garage and entered a home to burglarize the residence — all because a garage door opener was left inside an unattended vehicle parked in the driveway or curbside overnight or the garage door was left unsecured.  Start thinking of the garage as your front door and lock up. Please help me spread the word to the community — it is VITAL to secure your property.

There are other things that can help:  park in your garage.  Lighting.  Anti-theft devices if you must park outside.  Sight lines to your vehicle from the home.  Forming Neighborhood Watch groups to bond with your neighbors, partner with police and get training on what to watch for and how to report it.  Call 244-6644 to get a Neighborhood Watch Starter Kit.
