Property Crimes over the Weekend / What are you leaving in your vehicle that entices an auto burglar?

What are you leaving in your vehicles that entices an auto burglar?  Anything of value, anything visible.  The best deterrent is a vehicle interior clear of even the most insignificant item (to you) and locked up, windows rolled up.  Sure, there are some that will try to make entry to search a vehicle, but for the most part, if the vehicle is secured with nothing of value/visible, the auto burglar will move on to a less risky and time consuming vehicle to burglarize.

This weekend, we had reports of auto burglaries with the following items left in unattended vehicles that were burglarized:  A military ballistics vest with armor plating, a gas mask and a helmet all valued at $5,000.  Vehicle registration and insurance cards.  A purse, EBT card, NM drivers license and $80 cash.  Two computers, a lock box, contents (drawings) inside the lock box and survival gear.  A back pack and contents.  A back pack.

With this haul, there is a community/officer safety issue with the military gear, potential for identity theft with the IDs and other items that were listed as stolen.  I know it can be a bit time consuming to remove your property and secure it when parking, but boy, is it time consuming to get your life back on track when these types of property items are stolen.  I know I’d rather be on the prevention side than the credit-repair, financial damage or having military gear used by bad guys in a crime or SWAT stand-off than take my chances of whether my car will be broken  into by a burglar.
