Web Site Info / Coffee with A Cop / VIN Etching / Prevention Tips Learned from Last Week’s Burglaries / Property Crimes over the Weekend and Last Wed/Thu

Web Site Information/Update:  The APD Area Command web site emails to subscribers are not being emailed on a daily basis as they have been in the past, up until or around the last part of 2017.  Thank you to those who contacted me about this issue.  Unfortunately, the APD Area Command web sites are not working properly and inquiries and requests for ‘fixes’ have been made and solutions are being considered.  Once I get more information I will be happy to pass it along via the web site and at community meetings, but in the meantime, please try to remember to check the web site for crime prevention information.

Foothills Area Command Coffee with a Cop Event:  Wednesday, April 25th from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at McDonald’s at 13301 Central Ave NE.  This event is free and for the community to stop by McDonald’s and chat with our Foothills officers about policing matters, ask questions or just enjoy a cup of coffee together.

VIN Etching in April (Cottonwood Mall):  There will be a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etching event hosted by APD Auto Theft detectives on Saturday, April 14th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cottonwood Mall at 10000 Coors Bypass NW.  The event is free and all are welcome.  The VIN etching takes just a few minutes and all that is required is to bring the vehicle’s current registration so that the Auto Theft Unit can etch the VIN in all of the vehicle glass pieces.  VIN etching is an auto theft deterrent and recommended to avoid your vehicle being targeted for theft and taken to a ‘chop shop’ to be dismantled and sold for parts.  For more information, contact the Citizens’ Contact Center (dial 311) or for future VIN etching dates and locations.

Tips learned from last week’s burglaries:  What can I warn you about regarding our several residential and auto burglaries over the time period of Wed. April 4th through Sunday April 8th?  Lock up!  Remove all items of value from vehicles. We still have so many preventable auto burglaries occurring!  I want to get the word out to our community that the little extra moment to secure your property is far worth the hours of police reports, vehicle repairs, replacing stolen items and the awful feeling of being victimized.

For residential burglaries, I continue to see homes that are vacant (for sale or undergoing some type of construction) being targeted.  I am also seeing several residential burglaries where doors and windows were left unlocked.  Check and double-check to make sure you have secured your property.  Check those window screens — make sure they are not loose or torn or missing.  I am seeing several cases where window screens were removed and burglars got into the homes via windows.

Neighbors please continue to look out for one another and call 911 or 242-COPS (2677) if you see odd suspicious behavior — that would include seeing front doors or garage doors wide open and you know the resident is not home, homes that you know are vacant with strange people entering and leaving, etc.  Alert neighbors are so important to the block!  Thanks to those who took the time and called in incidents that just didn’t seem right – you are the unsung heroes on your block!
