Property Crimes Reported over the Weekend of Friday, 2/23 through Sunday, 2/25 in the Foothills / Hiking and Trail Areas Warning

Hiking and Trail Parking Areas Warning:  Remember when using our beautiful Foothills area trails and open space areas that it is important to not leave anything of value inside your vehicle.  Check your vehicle to make sure you have locked up, that windows are rolled up and that nothing is visible inside your vehicle.  Parked cars at these access points to trails and parks are targets for auto burglaries and often trail/parks users return to their vehicles to find broken windows and vehicles ransacked.  The most common items being stolen that have been left behind in vehicles include cell phones, wallets or purses and the contents (drivers licenses, credit/debit cards, cash, etc.), vehicle insurance and registration cards, and many other types of property.  Try to clear out the vehicle before you leave home and take wallets and insurance/registration and cell phones with you in a fanny pack, tote, back pack or keep in a pocket.  If you have a garage door opener that you normally leave behind in your parked car, take that with you.  Garage door openers are often stolen along with vehicle insurance and registration to obtain your home address and a way to make entry into your home to commit a residential burglary.

Give yourself peace of mind by 1)  minimizing what you have in your vehicle, 2)  taking important items with you, 3) leaving nothing visible in the vehicle, 4) locking the car.
