More Guns Stolen: This weekend the Foothills Area Command had reports of six guns and a sword stolen in auto theft, auto burglary and residential burglary incidents. Please take responsible steps to secure your weapons when they are not in use. We are inadvertently arming a criminal population by not properly storing and securing weapons, which puts the entire community at risk. If you own firearms, make it your mission to research ways to keep those firearms safe from burglary. Many gun shops and gun owner organizations can be valuable resources to learn what works for you and your budget. Keep a property inventory of your weapon make, model, caliber, serial number and any distinguishing features to better the odds of the weapon being returned to you if it is stolen and reported to police.

Quick take-away tips: The vacant homes are still a target — neighbors please be extra alert to call APD if you see suspicious activity at a home for sale/vacant or remodeling/vacant or vacation/vacant. Entries are being made via lifting window out of tracks, back sliding glass doors, damaging doors, entering via garages. Just locking up and adding anti-lift/anti-slide mechanisms to windows and sliding glass doors will drop your odds of being a residential burglary victim. An AR15 firearm was in an unlocked vehicle in a garage that was reported stolen this weekend — please take the extra 1-3 minutes to remove guns from parked vehicles and secure them in a safe.
