Are YOU ready? September is National Preparedness Month, and with Hurricanes Harvey and Irma fresh on all of our minds, this is a good time to think about your preparedness planning for yourself, your family and your community. Did you know that according to the National Ad Council, 69% of American families do not have an emergency plan in place? Neighbors will most likely be in the role of ‘a first responder’ if police are overwhelmed or pulled to more critical incident areas than your block. Do you know your neighbors? Do you have emergency contact information for each other? Do you have a plan?
Here are some tips to help you and to prompt a family conversation about how you will handle a crisis: Do you have a ‘go kit’ with clothing, documents, personal items (medications, glasses, etc.), food, water? Have you identified where you would go if you had to evacuate? Do you have updated contacts for family, friends, neighbors? Do you have emergency cash available if banks are not operating? If you have a plan, do you practice with the family? If you have a ‘go kit’ have you checked it recently and made sure you have stocked what you may need? Do you have crates/kennels for pets if you and the pets have to leave the area?
Although this is not a crime prevention issue, it’s important and our nation has seen some natural disasters in the last few weeks that will have repercussions for many years to come. Some expected, some unexpected. It is worth the time to consider, do some research and have a family discussion about your plan if disaster strikes.
