No Chasing, No Confronting, No Patrolling! / Officer & Community Appreciation Day / Property Crime over the Weekend

No Chasing, no confronting, no patrolling!  I want to take a moment to reiterate the Albuquerque Police Department Crime Prevention Unit’s emphasis on Neighborhood Watch groups being about neighbors caring about neighbors, building connections with each other and looking out for one another.  The Albuquerque Police Department does not encourage Neighborhood Watch groups to patrol, to chase, to confront or place themselves in potentially dangerous situations with those the members deem to be suspicious.  We do not endorse in any fashion chasing or ‘rousting’ homeless people.  Nor does APD Crime Prevention authorize a Neighborhood Watch group’s Block Captain to assume any police roles or responsibilities such as detaining subjects, harassing people who appear to be suspicious or interfering with law enforcement doing their duties.

Neighborhood Watch is all about knowing your neighbors, working together, communicating with each other and being willing to report suspicious activities or crimes to APD by calling 911 or 242-COPS (2677) from a safe place and letting our police officers do the rest. Neighborhood Watches are the extra eyes and ears on the block for the neighborhoods and our police officers.  Thank you to all of the hundreds of Foothills Area Command Neighborhood Watch Block Captains, to the many citizens who have completed Starter Kits, hosted Neighborhood Watch gatherings and supported Neighborhood Watch not only in the Foothills Area Command, but also throughout the city to build safer and stronger communities.

If you would like to form a Neighborhood Watch on your block or re-start one that has become inactive, contact APD Senior Crime Prevention Specialist Steve Sink at 244-6644 for a starter kit.

APD Foothills Area Command’s Officer & Community Appreciation Day:  Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who volunteered their time and those who donated a variety of items to make the Officer & Community Appreciation Day in the Foothills Area Command so much fun.  It was great to see old friends and meet new ones too.  The APD Foothills Area Command team could not have pulled off such a successful event without our community helpers and donors.  Many heartfelt thanks to all of you!
