New Neighborhood Watch Group Formed in the Foothills Area Command: The residents on the 12100-block of El Dorado Place NE formed a new Neighborhood Watch group last night. Thanks to Maryann B. for stepping forward to serve as the Block Captain and to Jim and Maryann for hosting a very well attended facilitation meeting — nine of ten homes on the block were represented, which is a great start.
Neighborhood Watches are citizen-driven and help local law enforcement by citizens being connected with one another, having some basic crime prevention training and being willing to call police when they see suspicious or criminal activity on the block. Neighbors looking out of neighbors, not chasing or confronting or forming patrols — just being connected and willing to make that call to 242-COPS (2677) or 911 from a safe place — is what it entails to be successful. Hosting a few social gatherings annually is another way to be successful as a watch group — these potlucks, cookie and lemonade or coffees or barbeques as a block will keep you connected, focused and gives you a chance to welcome any new residents to the block and update your contact lists for each other. If you’d like to start a Neighborhood Watch on your block, or in El Dorado Place NE’s situation last night, re-start one that died out call the APD Senior Crime Prevention Specialist Steve Sink at 244-6644 to have a conversation to get a Starter Kit and get the ball rolling.

What can we learn from the biggest issue we are facing right now regarding property crimes that occurred yesterday? Remove all articles of value and anything with personal information from vehicles and lock up when you park. That’s half the battle: controlling what is controllable in your environment.
Have a great day and be safe,
