Jane Court NE: Neighborhood Watch Excellence / Property crimes on Tuesday, May 9th

Jane Court NE Neighborhood Watch group (2900-block):  I saw an excellent example of Neighborhood Watch in action and the type of call that may have prevented a residential burglary.  One of the block members called police from a safe place yesterday morning and described a female looking into/trying windows and hopping the fence at a home the block members knew was vacant.  Our block watch member called the APD non-emergency line 242-COPS (2677) gave a great description of the female and why her actions were suspicious for the normal behavior of the block.  The caller also provided the home owner’s contact phone number if the police needed that information.  The caller then left to go to work.  Two Foothills officers were there within 10 minutes and found the female who was described by the caller.  The female had no business on the property and said she was trying to get out of the wind while waiting for a ride.  She was escorted off the property and told to make arrangements to wait for her ride elsewhere.  We do not know if the caller may have prevented a residential burglary or if the person just wanted to wait for a ride in someone’s fenced in yard and look into windows at the residence, BUT these are the types of calls that our officers receive from alert neighbors that can help the block be safer and it also demonstrated our core Neighborhood Watch concepts:

  1. be alert and serve as extra eyes and ears for the block,
  2. be willing to call 242-COPS or 911 as the situation guides you,
  3. provide the best description you can to the APD operator,
  4. do not chase or confront suspicious people
  5. have your neighbors’ contact information handy in case of emergencies,
  6. be in contact with each other as a block and look out for one another.

Great job Jane Court NE Neighborhood Watch!  If you would like to start a Neighborhood Watch on your block, contact APD Senior Crime Prevention Specialist Steve Sink at 244-6644 to get your Starter Kit.
