Going on vacation?

As vacation season approaches, I want to remind people not only to have a trusted person serve as ‘extra eyes and ears’ or a house-sitter, but let a trusted neighbor know you will be out of town.  Provide these people with your contact number in case of any emergencies where they need to contact you.  Vacant homes are being targeted for burglaries where the resident is on vacation, had a house-sitter, but were burglarized.  If neighbors know you will be gone, they can serve as an extra set of ‘eyes and ears’ and contact you or APD’s non-emergency number (242-COPS) if something seems amiss at the house.

APD substations provide Periodic Watch services, which means if you call the substation a request for officers to do a visual check of the home in between calls for service can be provided.  Periodic Watch services are for up to two weeks and serve as an extra layer of protection; however, the service is dependent upon the volume of calls for service during shifts and is a visual check (the officer won’t by checking all your windows, doors, gates, etc.).

Be safe,
