National Consumer Protection Week: A great resource for learning about schemes being implemented by criminals using the internet and personal data is the Krebs on Security web site and e-newsletter. The Krebs on Security site is very informative and worth taking a look at or subscribing to the e-newsletter that is available.
Reminder: The Foothills Community Policing Council meeting will be on Monday, March 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the Holiday Park Community Center at 11710 Comanche Road NE. I will be there to talk about the role of a Crime Prevention Specialist and Officer Mick Rael will be there to talk about the role of an APD School Resource Officer in our middle and high schools here in the Foothills Area Command.
Another unsecured firearm was reported stolen from a parked vehicle yesterday in the Foothills Area Command. This brings my tally to 17 firearms reported stolen in the Foothills Area Command in March during auto or residential burglaries. I’ve tallied 67 unsecured firearms stolen in the Foothills Area Command year to date; if you own a firearm for the good of our community, please properly secure that weapon.
Calling to have officers dispatched and then declining to file police reports: The numbers listed below are off due to 1 additional residential burglary at a hotel/motel where the manager/caller declined to file a police report, but had an officer dispatched and 3 auto burglaries where the callers declined to file a police report or left the scene so the officer who was dispatched had no one to interview and file a report as the victim.
By calling and requesting officers be dispatched to tell the officers about a crime, but declining to file a police report or leaving before the officer arrives skews the full view of crime in our Area Command. Crime Analysis can’t get the whole picture of criminal activity in our area, can’t pull important data to help identity patterns or suspects and I can’t get the information I need to help our community. APD does have on-line reporting (www.cabq.gov/police) and telephone reporting call-takers (768-2030) for those who do not want to stick around at the scene to wait for the police to arrive.
