Property Crime in the Foothills on Monday, November 7th – What’s Trending

Trending:  I am seeing multiple auto burglaries with entries made by simply opening the unlocked door or reaching into the rolled down window to steal items left in the unattended vehicle.  The amount of IDs, purses, wallets and other items with personal information left inside vehicles being stolen is staggering.  These items are used to commit further crimes such as identity theft and residential burglary.

Items stolen from vehicles yesterday in the Foothills Area Command include:  1) vehicle registration, vehicle insurance, CD collection, cash; 2) a wallet, drivers license, Social Security card, mulitple credit cards; 3) a wallet and various forms of ID; 4) a purse and multiple IDs.  These auto burglaries were at a large apartment complex, a large retail center, and two single-family residences.

Please remind family and friends about what they are leaving in their vehicles when they park to hike, go shopping, or park curbside for the night.  Although you need the vehicle registration and insurance documents in the car when you are driving, you do not need to leave them in the car when it is parked.  Carry these items in your wallet and carry your wallet with you.  These were all preventable crimes if victims just removed all articles of value when they parked and rolled up windows and locked the car.
