Another Gun Stolen…Door to Door Soliciting — They’re Baaaack!…Property Crime over the Weekend

Another gun stolen — We had the third gun stolen in the Foothills month-to-date on Saturday (11/4/16).  The gun was left inside a vehicle that was stolen in the Mirabella/Mira Vista community.  A person who was not afraid to steal a vehicle is now armed with a citizen’s gun.  Please secure your firearms!  Either keep the weapon on your person when you park at your home or look into the variety of models available for securing a gun inside a vehicle.   This is becoming an officer safety and community safety issue.

The Foothills Substation (12800 Lomas Blvd NE) has free trigger locks and an accompanying brochure for the community in the lobby.  Pick up your trigger lock and take an informational brochure form the lobby table Mondays through Fridays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

They’re Baaaack….I’ve had two reports of door to door solicitors with slick lines about helping deployed military with ‘care boxes’ in the Foothills Area Command from two of my Neighborhood Watch Block Captains.  KOAT Channel 7 news reporter Kirsten Swanson did a good story on this occurring in Rio Rancho over the weekend. The story is at www.koat.com/local news with the title “Rio Rancho Police Warn of Suspicious Solicitors” — check it out!

My recommended response to this type of activity is: 1) post a No Solicitors sign, 2) respond through your locked door that you are not interested and to respect your No Solicitors sign, 3) if the person is aggressive or refusing to leave or demanding you open the door call 242-COPS (2677) from a safe place and provide the APD operator the best description possible, 4) teach the rest of the family how you want them to respond if a stranger is at the door who was not expected or first ‘cleared’ by a responsible adult at home.

I have placed a large stack of free No Solicitors signs and the companion brochure on Door to Door Soliciting in our lobby (12800 Lomas Blvd NE).  You are welcome to come by and pick up a sign and a brochure for your home or your neighbor’s home.

I expect more of this activity as the holidays approach and appeals for donations increase, some on the up and up and some that are outright scams.  Do your homework, take the time to research charitable organizations and don’t feel you have to hand over money under ‘act now’ or other pressure tactics.  If your community has No Trespassing signage (or your home), those signs should be respected and the person politely asked to leave.  If you have private courtesy patrols, be sure and let them know solicitors are operating on your block.  If you are a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, let the rest of the block know so that they are aware.  As always, feel free to call 242-COPS and an officer will be dispatched to check the area.
