Ntl Crime Prevention Month Tip of the Day / Trends / Property Crime over the Weekend

October is National Crime Prevention Month:  Here’s your tip of the day in recognition of National Crime Prevention Month:  Ask for a store escort to your vehicle when exiting the grocery store or a security guard to watch you or walk with you to your vehicle when leaving the shopping mall.  Thank you to the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners (ISCPP) for some of the tips I have been sharing this month.

Trends:  I am seeing so many articles left inside of parked vehicles and the areas being targeted are pretty much all over the map in our Area Command.  Single family residential neighborhoods to some extent, but many ‘target rich environments’ are getting hit and hit hard.  The super-store parking lots with big-box retail business, the apartment complexes with many vehicles in one location and vast parking lots and also at areas with large-scale events (sports fields).  I did see a reduction of the auto burglary activity being reported at the trail head parking areas over the weekend, which is good news.  This type of activity is a crime of opportunity:  you combine the opportunity (no potential witnesses, criminal feels low risk is worth the reward) + the motivated criminal + a weaker target (items left visible inside the car, not locked, no alarm, etc.) = auto theft or auto burglary occurs.
