Ntl Crime Prvtn Month Tip of the Day / Weekend Property Crime and Trends

National Crime Prevention Month:  Your Tip of the Day — Don’t leave valuable property inside your vehicle.  If you must have something in the vehicle for your errand that is valuable and you can’t carry it with you, lock it in the trunk before you leave for your destination.

Weekend (Friday – Saturday – Sunday) Property Crimes in the Foothills

1 Robbery to an Individual:  Central & Figueroa.

14 Stolen Vehicles: 500-block of Martha SE, 700-block of Stephen Moody SE, 12900-block of Central NE, 12800-block of Dunes SE, 12800-block of Dorado SE, 400-block of Dorado SE, 11000-block of Towner NE, 1700-block of Juan Tabo Blvd NE, 2500-block of Myra Pl NE, 12000-block of Phoenix NE, 14300-block of Cedarbrook Ln NE, 6500-block of Meadow Hills NE, 10700-block of Academy Rd NE, 5700-block of Teakwood Trl NE.  One vehicle left running and unattended was stolen.  One vehicle stolen by friend of victim.  One vehicle stolen out of the home’s garage along with purse, credit cards, IDs, garage door opener, keys.  Securing your property is job #1 — this is within your control and can bring a real sense of empowerment in regard to these crimes of opportunity.  Control what you can and you’ll be ahead of the curve when it comes to crime.

4 Residential Burglaries: 800-block of Marie Park NE, 2300-block of Jane St NE, 12300-block of Prospect NE, 3800-block of Camino De La Sierra NE.  APD needs everyone’s help regarding vacant homes and extra eyes of neighbors on the block reporting suspicious or strange activity.  Three of four residential burglaries over the weekend were to vacant homes.  One home of four was occupied, but the garage door was left open overnight and criminals stole a gun safe, 6 guns inside the safe, and multiple tools from the open garage.  Again, we need extra eyes on the block in residential areas to alert a neighbor if the garage door was left open.  Be a good neighbor and make that 242-COPS from a safe place or alert a neighbor if you think they left the garage door open by mistake.

Special note to those who own firearms:  Start a property inventory for your firearms with make, model, serial numbers, colors, add-on features.  All too often, the owners have no identifying specifics on firearms and once stolen, they are gone for good and won’t be discovered as stolen if re-sold or pawned.

9 Auto Burglaries: 400-block of Shirley SE, Chico & Morris,  600-block of Green Valley Dr SE, 400-block of Western Skies SE, Elena Gallegos parking area, Spain & High Desert parking area, 5500-block of Edwards Dr NE, 10300-block of Delicado NE. 5400-block of Beebe NE.  Looks like four of nine auto burglaries were to unlocked vehicles.  The others were smash & grabs (breaking a window to steal what is inside the vehicle).  As you can see, our open space areas were hit hard and trail users continue to leave purses and valuables inside vehicles and walk away (or run or cycle).  This weekend auto burglars netted:  miscellaneous items, military ID, keys to work and keys to home, sunglasses, a tool collection, IDs and personal documents, a purse with drivers license – multiple credit cards being used almost immediately, 3 purses and their contents from one vehicle, a purse and an APS-issued laptop, military gear.

I hope your week starts out well and you can share what you learn from the web site’s daily posts with others.  Stay safe,

Jill Garcia, Crime Prevention Specialist / ICPS, NCPS – APD, Foothills Area Command
