Grub from a Truck? Need an Alarm System for $40? Spotted in the Area…Property Crimes on Wed. 08/24/16

Spotted in the Area:  My community contacts have alerted me that we have some door-to-door activity in the area and you should be aware of these folks.  I have a supply of free “No Solicitors” signs here at the Foothills Substation (12800 Lomas Blvd NE) and the companion piece on “Door to Door Solicitation” to learn more about how these signs send a visual message and about the city ordinance.  These items are on the display table in the Foothills Substation lobby for the community between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Grub from a Truck?  Yes, the meat guy is baaaack….Thanks to Neighborhood Watch Block Captain Jay S. for the update.  A male is attempting to sell meat from his truck in our residential areas.  Last spotted in the Embudo Canyon area east of Tramway up along Lomas.  A quick call to 242-COPS (2677) to report illegitimate door to door soliciting is an acceptable call to make from a safe place without chasing, following or confronting.  If you call, try to provide the operator with a description of the person, vehicle and direction of travel.

Need an alarm system for $40?  There is also a report of a male going door to door peddling ‘free’ alarm equipment if you pay a $40/month fee.  In order for this guy to come back to your home and do the installation, he wants you to post a sign in your yard (red flag), with the sign selected from a photo gallery from the internet (red flag).  He claims to have records of the home owner’s past alarm systems (in the case reported to me the home owner did not have such a system — red flag), he wears a polo shirt with a logo and has no supervisor or home office contact information (red flag), nothing in writing or business cards or a business address claiming everything is at the printer’s (multiple red flags).

So what to do if you are bothered by a stranger on your porch?  I recommend that you keep doors locked at all times.  If you are home, respond through the locked door that you are not interested and to honor your “No Solicitors” sign.  If the person is aggressive, refuses to leave or appears suspicious to you, please feel free to call the APD non-emergency line 242-COPS (2677) to report a suspicious person in the area.  Teach your children how you want them to respond.  I do not recommend following or chasing or being confrontational in any way — we want you to be safe — just make the call and the police officer and dispatch can take it from there.

Property Crimes in the Foothills on Wednesday, 08/24/16

1 Robbery to a Business:  4700-block of Tramway Blvd NE.

4 Stolen Vehicles: 1000-block of Tramway Blvd NE, 14000-block of Indian School Road NE, two vehicles at the same address on the 3000-block of Matador.

1 Commercial Burglary: 900-block of Juan Tabo Blvd NE.

2 Residential Burglaries: 1400-block of Marcella St NE, 900-block of Chelwood Park Blvd NE.

2 Auto Burglaries: 500-block of Western Skies SE, 100-block of Westlake Dr NE.

Trends? I am continuing to see vehicles parked outside overnight curbside or in driveways targeted in our residential areas.  If you are going to park vehicles in the driveway or outside of a secured garage every night, you will need to balance that level of risk with beefed up home security practices.

Be safe,

Jill Garcia, Crime Prevention Specialist / ICPS, NCPS – APD Foothills Area Command
