Workshop Wednesday at the Foothills: August’s workshop with Mothers Against Drunk Driving: I got so much interesting information last night at the workshop from MADD. Here are a few MADD Facts that I would like to share with readers:
- High school students who use alcohol or other substances are five times more likely to drop out of school.
- Teen alcohol use kills 47,000 people every year — that’s more than ALL illegal drugs combined.
- Kids who start drinking at a young age are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash.
There are MADD “Power of Parents” handbooks on talking to teens about alcohol and a handouts “Conversation Starters for Talking with Your Teen” and “Seven Tips for Connecting with Your Teen” on the brochure table in the Foothills Substation lobby. Contact MADD at the number listed below if you would like a supply of the helpful booklets.
If you would like MADD to do a presentation for your neighborhood group, school, or types of gatherings contact the local chapter at (505) 255-2955. Victim support is available at 1-817-MADD-HELP. Thanks to Ashleigh for a terrific presentation.
More information on this topic of underage drinking can be found through the Center for Disease Control (Fact Sheet on Underage Drinking), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (see Special Populations/Underage Drinking) and DriveSafely.Net for Resources on Driving Safety and Teen Drunk Driving.
Model Homes: We had three burglarized for the appliances in the Foothills Area Command yesterday. Remember — we need your eyes and ears to be vigilant and I am available to do site visits to make security recommendations by appointment.
Knives: A machete and 3-4 knives hidden in vehicles were in vehicles that were stolen yesterday. Criminals now are armed with knives today and 9 guns for the month of August so far from Foothills crime victims. Please remove ALL articles of value — including guns, knives, machetes and the like — when you park and walk away.
