New Neighborhood Watch Group! Free Trigger Locks, Vials of Life, Property Crime on Tuesday

New APD Foothills Area Command Neighborhood Watch Group Formed!  Thank you to Christine and Vicky for stepping forward as Block Captain and Co-Block Captain and a big thank you to Linda C. for being so motivational to the residents of the 400-block of Burma NE in forming a Neighborhood Watch group.  These groups are effective – they get neighbors connected with each other and APD Area Command law enforcement team, they are taught basic crime prevention and how to safely report crime or suspicious activity and build stronger communities a block at a time.  If you would like to start a Neighborhood Watch group or jump-start one that has fizzled out, contact APD Sr. Crime Prevention Specialist Steve Sink at 244-6644 to get a starter kit.

Free Trigger Locks:  We still have a supply of free trigger locks at the APD Foothills Substation at 12800 Lomas Blvd NE (between Tramway and Juan Tabo).  Come by and pick one up in our lobby during our business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.  First-come, first-serve until they are all gone —

Vials of Life:  I will be leaving Vials of Life kits in the APD Foothills Substation lobby tomorrow for the community.  The Vial of Life kits are a small flier explaining the program and a magnetized baggie for citizens to store medication or supplement information in the waterproof baggie.  The magnetized baggie containing the information  should be kept it on your refrigerator in the event you have a medical emergency so that the first responders will know your medication information and where they can locate your meds should you need to be transported in an emergency or cannot speak for yourself in an emergency at home.  The Albuquerque Fire Department generously supplied me with 100 of these and 30 are going to attendees at my “Emergencies” Workshop Wednesday crime prevention class tonight; the rest will be available in our lobby for the community to pick up during business hours on Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at 12800 Lomas Blvd NE.

Property Crime in the Foothills on Tuesday, July 12th:

6 Stolen Vehicles:  700-block of Morris St NE, 400-block of Martha St NE, 12800-block of San Juan NE, 10600-block of Menaul Blvd NE, 10200-block of San Gabriel NE, 9000-block of Spain Rd NE.

1 Residential Burglary: 10300-block of Norman St NE.

3 Auto Burglaries: 1100-block of Chiricahua SE, 800-block of Bryce Canyon Se, 3000-block of Jane Pl NE.

Crime Prevention Tip:  One third of the auto thefts yesterday in the Foothills were committed (according to callers) by people known to the caller.  If you hang out with an untrustworthy person, make it harder to access your vehicle and vehicle keys for that person.  It’s good sense to store your vehicle keys out of sight in most cases anyway.  If you have a set of keys that you can’t get back from an ex, shady buddy, etc. it may be worth it to get your vehicle re-keyed versus the cost of suddenly having no vehicle, a totaled vehicle, or your vehicle being stolen and used to commit another crime, etc.

Stay safe, have a great day and come by the substation tomorrow to pick up a Vial of Life packet if you need one —
