National Night Out — 2016’s National Night Out will be on Tuesday, August 2nd this year. To register your community event, call the Citizen’s Contact Center (dial 311) by 5:00 p.m. July 28th. National Night Out is your chance to turn on the porch light, lock the front door and go out and join neighbors for a gathering on your block, at your local park, clubhouse, etc. Some groups go all-out and get permits for block parties, have teen volunteers assisting with a kids table for arts and crafts, face painting, etc. It’s entirely up to the group what they would like to do for an event. Events in the Foothills Area Command have ranged from hot dog/burger BBQs, classic car shows, ice cream socials, potlucks, block parties, local talent (bluegrass band), etc. National Night Out is a social night to catch up with each other as neighbors, welcome new neighbors to your block and reconnect with law enforcement, various city department employees and elected officials from the Mayor’s and City Council office.
Trends I am seeing — use crime prevention techniques to reduce your level of risk: Remove all articles of value from vehicles. I am seeing a few cases this week where employer property is being stolen from employee vehicles (papers, documents, laptops). As employees with access to proprietary information, we have to be even more careful than usual about not driving around with these items on trips around town and properly safeguarding information, access keys and badges, laptops, tablets, etc. Company/commercial vehicles are being picked on this week: batteries and tools have been stolen. Lock up, remove articles of value and take the same measures with employer property as your would with your personal property.
Documents being stolen from vehicles –– Social Security cards, birth certificates, marriage licenses, work documents, vehicle registrations/insurance papers, military documents, passport, etc.
Fireworks Questions? See the City of Albuquerque web site, www.cabq.gov, and go to the Fire Department page.
Have a safe day and enjoy your Independence Day / holiday weekend — the Foothills Substation will be closed on Monday, July 4th and I will be out July 4-8th and returning the 11th, so you will not see daily posts during my absence.
