Your vehicles and controlling your environment:
While reviewing the property crimes that occurred in the Foothills yesterday, one common thread stood out to me: many of these crimes were preventable and created several victims and the potential for further crimes to be committed. The auto thefts yesterday – five in one day – included unforced entries to vehicles (leaving the vehicle unlocked or with windows down) and one of those five vehicles was left warming up and unattended. Of the three auto burglaries committed yesterday, two of three were to vehicles left unlocked with articles of value inside.
As a citizen you have power and you have a job: deter-delay-deny entry and control your environment. What’s that all mean? Lock up, roll up windows, remove all items of value (including personal information) from vehicles when you walk away, use your garages, park under good lighting and places with good sight lines if a garage is not an option, consider anti-theft devices (there are many at all price points and gadgets from low tech to high tech).
Teach your family about crime prevention, tell people about this web site so that they can get a grasp on what’s going on in our area and how to prevent it, if you are a community leader with a position on an association or board or a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, spread the word! As a community, we need to get the word out — if you are reader of this web site, you are already tapped into crime prevention.
Can you think of just one more person who is not aware of what they can do to prevent crime and recommend this web site and other crime prevention services to them to help build a stronger community?
Thanks for reading, folks — I appreciate it and I know you are helping your local police department tremendously.
