Two new Neighborhood Watch groups in the Foothills! Property Crime / Guns and Cars…Again….

Congratulations to the residents of the 400-block of Zena Lona NE and the East Gate Church and residents of the 500-block of Zena Lona NE:  These two groups of residents are the latest citizens who have formed Neighborhood Watch groups.  We had a really fun meeting last night with combined residents from Burma, Conejo, Zena Lona and the East Gate Church.  These partnerships are so important to our community and help law enforcement with more eyes on the block and neighbors connecting with neighbors.

If you want to re-start a Neighborhood Watch group that has ceased to be active or start a new Neighborhood Watch group on your block, call Steve Sink with APD Crime Prevention at 244-6644 to get a starter kit.

The APD Foothills team extends a big ‘thank you’ to:  our new Block Captains, Tom and Jay; to Cara, Shirley and Kenny who volunteered to be Co-Block Captains,to Jay for providing pizza and refreshments at the meeting, to Linda who has provided tireless motivation and education to the general community in proximity to her own Neighborhood Watch group and to the East Gate Church for providing the meeting space and the partnership to APD Foothills and these residents.

All we need is at least 50% of the homes on the block represented at the Neighborhood Watch Facilitation meeting and someone to step up as Block Captain to be the point of contact for the group and order the signage.  We can book a community center for a ‘cluster meeting’ if multiple blocks in the same neighborhood want to do a large facilitation meeting in one night at one location — food for thought for those who are thinking about starting a watch group.

Guns and Cars…AGAIN — I cannot stress any more how important it is to secure your firearm and to not leave firearms in parked vehicles.  EVER.  This issue is becoming a community and officer safety issue at this point.  So far in May there have been 10 guns stolen in the Foothills and 9 of 10 were stolen from unattended (parked) vehicles.  The rest of us are counting on gun owners to take responsibility for securing their weapons — please avert a tragedy and take the proper steps to secure your firearms.
