It’s Law Enforcement Torch Run time! The annual law enforcement run to support the Special Olympics is tomorrow, Friday, May 20th. Normally the Torch Run starts at the Tramway/Central area in the Foothills Area Command and the runners (law enforcement, family and friends) run 8.4 miles and run to Civic Plaza. There will be a short ceremony at Civic Plaza at 6:30 p.m. and then the final portion of the run leaves Civic Plaza and concludes at UNM Track and Field Complex and the Special Olympics New Mexico torch will be lit.
The run requires a lane closure on Central and you may find some traffic congestion or lots of activity at Tramway/Central around 5:00 p.m. This is temporary for the run and things will be back to ‘normal’ shortly after the start of the run.
Warnings: We had so many valuables stolen from vehicles yesterday. I know my readers are already savvy about not leaving articles of value, ‘hidden’ items inside vehicles and removing firearms, vehicle registrations and insurance papers behind in parked vehicles. I need your help reaching to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers who do not know about removing items when parking and walking away. These are crimes of opportunity and the opportunity for a criminal to break into your vehicle drops dramatically with locking up and leaving nothing of value inside the vehicle — whether visible or under a seat, tucked into a side pocket, etc. Please help me get the word out — I am seeing so much of this activity lately and my heart goes out to those who have been victimized. You all know that the best way to beat a problem is with a grass-roots effort — I believe that’s where you come in — the Foothills community web site readers — please teach others about this issue and maybe we can see fewer victims and make a dent in this problem. We have a subscriber count now of 525 readers — just think of the opportunity here if each reader told 1 person about this web site and the crime prevention tips!
