Crime Prevention Tips: I want to remind people throughout this month about offenders targeting vehicles parked at places of worship. It is going to be important to remember to lock up, leave nothing visible and to take the garage door opener and vehicle insurance and registration papers with you when you park. I spoke to one of our officers this morning about this trend and I want every reader to be aware — our detective has interviewed offenders who wait for this time of year when citizens are parked at places of worship for at least an hour service / fellowship and break into parked vehicles to steal garage door openers and vehicle registrations and insurance papers. Why? You will be occupied for at least an hour or hour and a half, and the offender now has access to your home and your address. The odds are you live near the place of worship. The odds are visitors at places of worship are focused on getting inside and getting a seat and may forget to lock up or not realize the value of those items left behind in vehicles. If you attend a place of worship with limited parking, you may have to go to neighboring streets and overflow parking, which means even fewer people keeping an eye on vehicles or noticing illegitimate activity. You do need to have your vehicle insurance and registration in the vehicle when you are driving; however, you can carry it with you when you park. Remember: garage door openers are just another version of a key to the largest door to your home. Help me spread the word about this trend — I want to provide you with information and tools to be safer and to ‘harden your targets’ and spreading the word to family, friends and neighbors may help prevent some from being victimized.
