Crime Prevention Tips of the Day: Your vehicle is a treasure trove for criminals! How about doing a ‘clean-sweep’ of your car this weekend — clean it out and review what type of items you leave behind when you park. You may be surprised!
Items stolen yesterday, in a 24-hour period of 7 auto burglaries in the Foothills were: personal documents with personal information, wallets, purse and the contents, credit cards, keys to vehicle, a camera, tools and a drills, clothing, a diaper bag and several miscellaneous small items. Why are these things so attractive to auto burglars? These items can be leveraged, from one crime to multiple crimes such as auto theft, committing identity theft, fraud, forgery, re-selling or trading items for quick cash at pawn shops, unscrupulous flea markets, criminal rings, etc. This weekend would be a great time to clean out your car and study what you are leaving behind that could be used for further gain past an auto break-in.
If you must park outside a garage or don’t have a garage, park in well-lit spots with good visibility. Lock up your vehicle — of the 7 auto burglaries yesterday, at least 2 were to unlocked vehicles. Remove all items of value, including papers or receipts that reveal your personal information. Do not leave anything visible in the vehicle, no matter how inconsequential you think it may be.
I’d like to hear from any readers on the web site if you did a ‘clean sweep’ of your car, re-arranged your garage to fit your vehicle inside, if you made a commitment to leave nothing of value behind in your vehicle. Nothing is better than shared information and feedback, and you — the readers — have great stories and tidbits to share that help others.
Have a great ‘clean-sweep’ weekend and be safe,
