Property Crime on Thu. 2/11/16 and a few words about keys…

Keys:  One of our stolen vehicles yesterday had keys left inside the vehicle while the owner walked away and into a store.  Unfortunately, the vehicle was stolen during that 5-8 minute time span, but there was a passenger inside the vehicle at the time of the theft:  a white Labrador.  Please use basic caution and lock your vehicle and take the keys with you when you park and walk away.  This entire incident could have been prevented.  Auto theft is a crime of opportunity:  it takes a motivated criminal, a target (property) and the opportunity presenting itself.  Layer the target with protective measures (taking keys, locking up, etc.), make the opportunity not so appealing (risk of being caught for a criminal, too difficult or time consuming for a criminal, etc.) and you have effectively hardened your target and reduced your odds of being a victim.  I hope the dog will be located at some point and will be unharmed and reunited with its owner.  Be safe this holiday weekend and make it a point to secure your property with care.
