Safer Internet Day is Tuesday, February 9th: I have some resources for those interested in internet safety:
- APD Crime Prevention has printed brochures on “Safety on the Internet” available at police substations. If you stop by the Foothills Substation (12800 Lomas between Juan Tabo and Tramway), I have placed a supply of these brochures in our lobby at the front counter. Help yourself; we are open Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- AARP has excellent resources on this topic at their web site at aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork and at aarp.org/tek. They also have a local office with print material available on Juan Tabo Blvd NE.
- The Federal Trade Commission has an e-newsletter that I receive monthly and often covers internet scams along with other types of ploys to separate your from your money or extract personal information. Log on to ftc.gov and the e-newsletter I recommend is their “Penn Corner” publication.
- The National Crime Prevention Council has articles and materials on internet safety as well as other topics related to crime prevention. They can be accessed at www.ncpc.org.
I hope you enjoy these resource recommendations on this topic. Of course, there are many other resources, and like my crime prevention tips, take what suits you and your needs to help you be a safe internet user.
