Crime Prevention Tips of the Day: Use your scanning skills (situational awareness is the term) to determine who is around you and what they are doing. Is it legitimate behavior for the setting/situation? When using ATMs, I advise you go inside and not flash the cash. Look around — is anyone lurking? You can always go back another time, return with a buddy or go to a different location if things don’t feel safe. No need to go on with the transaction if you feel in danger.
Keys to vehicles: Again, a reminder on key custody: is the person who has a set of keys to your vehicle still trust-worthy? One of three stolen vehicles reported yesterday was taken with the keys (a preventable crime).
Two of four of our residential burglaries reported yesterday were unforced entries; 50% were preventable crimes. Locking up doors, windows, securing doggie doors, keeping garage doors closed and secured are all going to work in your favor when protecting your home from a break-in. Neighbors looking out for one another also helps — if you see what appears to be ‘casing’ behavior, call it in to 242-COPS from a safe place and we’ll send an officer.
Be safe and put crime prevention into practice — you will be controlling your environment and reducing your odds of being a victim.
