Crime Prevention Tip of the Day and Property Crime on Monday, November 9th

2 Stolen Vehicles: 10400-block of Candelaria NE, 12600-block of Montgomery Blvd NE.

3 Auto Burglaries: 300-block of Dorado SE, 10100-block of Norman NE, 11800-block of Montgomery Blvd NE.

Crime Prevention Tip of the Day:  Stop leaving firearms behind in unattended vehicles.  Stop leaving keys inside parked vehicles.  Remove all items of value when you park and walk away.  Properly secure your property.

Yesterday a vehicle was stolen on the 12600-block of Montgomery with the keys left inside the vehicle, a 22 caliber Smith & Wesson, $300 cash, a checkbook and a garage door opener to the victim’s home.  This was one criminal’s lucky day.  Most of the items that were left in the unattended vehicle with the keys left inside are things that will be used to commit further crimes.  The gun: possibly to harm a police officer, an innocent citizen, a child… The cash:  potentially will be used to buy drugs, furthering the crime cycle.  The checkbook:  to commit fraud or identity theft, which is a nightmare for victims to tackle snce most identity thefts average about 2 years of time on the victim’s end to clear up.  The garage door opener:  a big, giant key to your home.  Leaving keys in a parked, unattended vehicle is an invitation to an opportunistic criminal.  This was a 100% preventable crime with the potential for some serious consequences for our community.  Protect your property by controlling your environment and securing your property.
