Crime Prevention tips based on these cases:  I don’t have many details on the car jacking, but what I can offer to you is to think about situational awareness.  Scan the area when you are in your vehicle.  Leave room to maneuver your vehicle if you have to leave the area quickly.  Watch for people exhibiting abnormal behavior for the setting.

Our stolen vehicle was taken in a 5 minute time frame while the owner was jump-starting the vehicle.  This is a crime of opportunity.  Never leave a vehicle running and unattended.  With cooler weather approaching, these types of vehicle thefts will be on the rise (leaving a vehicle warming up and the owner walking away leaving the vehicle unattended).  There are car thieves who look specifically for signs of vehicles left running and unattended.  As a community, we need to stop leaving vehicles with keys inside and then walk away from our vehicles, leaving them as easy targets.

Our residential burglary was an unforced entry to the home, as were 3 of 4 of our auto burglaries yesterday.  You have the power to control your environment — that means locking up, securing your property, removing all items of value from vehicles when you park and walk away.  Spread the word to family, friends and neighbors to just change some old habits and adopt new ones like checking the doors and windows of both homes and vehicles, keeping garage doors closed, removing all items of value from vehicles when you park.  Let’s get one step ahead of the crime by practicing crime prevention.
