Crime Prevention Tips to help you:  All 3 of our stolen vehicle cases were reported on Sunday.  One vehicle had the key in the driver’s side door lock.  Check your vehicle when you park — is it secured, have you removed all the valuables and your papers with personal information that could be stolen and used to commit other crimes?

Residential burglaries:  Keep the garage doors closed.  As a community, we have to get better at keeping garages closed.  Try thinking of the garage door to your home as the biggest door to your home.  Not only do items in the garage get stolen, but vehicles do too.  The potential for a criminal to enter the home via the garage is high, endangering you and your family.  Be a helpful neighbor, and if you see a garage door open on your block, kindly remind the home owner to help prevent burglary and vehicle theft or harm to their family.  If on vacation, alert a trusted neighbor or two so they know.  If that neighbor sees suspicious activity at your home when they know you are away, they can call 242-COPS (2677) or 911 from a safe place and report it to APD so we can send an officer.  With these last few summer days winding down before school starts, if you go on vacation, let a trusted neighbor know and leave your emergency contact number with that neighbor too.  Another thing you can do is start up a Neighborhood Watch group to get to know your neighbors, to learn what police ask you to be watchful for and how to safely report any incidents.  Call 244-6644 to get a Neighborhood Watch Starter Kit.

Auto Burglaries:  Nine over the weekend in the Foothills and the majority were all on Sunday.  Five of the nine were to unlocked vehicles.  Of the nine auto burglaries, citizens are missing:  a TV, a Blue Ray, a generator, debit cards, credit cards (being used at various locations after the burglary), 2 firearms, clothing, 2 purses left on vehicle floorboards, gold/diamond wedding ring set, gold/turquoise ring set, keys to a chapel, insurance papers, wallet, IDs, an iPod and $700 in cash.  Remove all items of value when you walk away from your vehicle and lock up.  Many of these auto burglaries were preventable – take the extra steps to control your environment and secure your property.  Most of these types of offenders move on to weaker targets (vehicles) if you simply lock the vehicle and remove any valuables.
