Crime Prevention based on these cases: Awareness in parking lots — scan the area around you. Note who is there and what they are doing. Do they appear to have legitimate business in a retail/entertainment center parking lot? If it doesn’t feel safe to you, leave. You can always return another time or with a buddy. Notify the place of business and talk to the management — they do not want their customers to intimidated or afraid to use their parking lots. Ask for an escort to your vehicle before you leave the business. Do not flash cash, cell phones, etc.
I am continuing to see garage door openers, vehicle registrations, vehicle insurance papers, purses, wallets, prescription medications, TVs, laptops and various IDs stolen from unattended vehicles. Remove ALL items of value from your vehicle when you park and walk away. These items are used to commit futher crimes – residential burglaries, auto theft, identity theft, fraud and forgery. When items are left behind in parked vehicles, it also attracts a criminal element to the area, as it becomes an ‘easy pickin’s’ target area for criminals. Change this one habit of leaving behind valuables in vehicles and you can reduce your odds of being a victim of crime.
