I was invited by the National Crime Prevention Association to share some new and innovative crime prevention outreach ideas that I am working on in the APD Foothills Area Command recently for the NCPA’s fall newsletter. Here is what I submitted; maybe some of these efforts I have been working on will get your creative juices flowing on expanding crime prevention for your block, Neighborhood Association or HOA or community group. Stay safe!

APD, Foothills Area Command
Walk the Block program:
The APD Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention Specialist, Jill Garcia, has implemented teaching basic CPTED principles to Neighborhood Watch Block Captains by inviting the Block Captain to ‘walk the block with Jill.’ She points out crime prevention practices to harden targets so Block Captains learn concepts on their own block that can be simply applied with minimal effort and cost.
Spanish Speakers’ Tenant Watch Meetings for Crime Free Multi-Housing Partners:
The APD Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention Specialist, Jill Garcia, reached out to the Spanish-speaking community within a mobile home park by utilizing APD Spanish-speaking staff to co-present basic crime prevention principles in Spanish to residents. Providing crime prevention services in familiar languages helps reduce the odds of Spanish-only speakers being victimized, builds safer communities and fosters diverse partnership opportunities.
APD Foothills Area Command Web Site:
The APD Foothills Area Command was selected this year as the first APD Area Command to have its own web site geared towards providing crime prevention and partnership opportunities to the community. Subscribers receive e-mail updates on Daily Watch Notes, crime prevention instruction, notices on Foothills-hosted crime prevention workshops, the Crime Free Multi-Housing program and APD-sponsored events. The Crime Prevention Specialist, Jill Garcia, serves as administrator for the web site and posts daily.
